Taking the very first steps: extinct to extant (new series)
The quest for the Night Parrot

The Night Parrot had not been officially seen since 1912 and so 50 years on was declared extinct in 1962. Not everyone was convinced and John Young, wildlife consultant and wildlife filmmaker, outlines his 15 year quest to find the elusive Night Parrot. A quest that has been an outstanding success! However it is just the very first tiny step in ensuring conservation of this rarest of Australian birds.
Where it began

How could the night parrot, a species so widely distributed when first identified by science in 1861, be on the brink of extinction by 1900? Professor Graham Pyke from the School of the Environment at the University of Technology, Sydney fits some of the important pieces in place in this fascinating puzzle.
